Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced writer Perihan Mağden and journalist Tunca Öğreten to 7 thousand TL judicial fine each due to “insulting Erdoğan.” The sentences against Mağden and Öğreten were not deferred.
The lawsuit has been filed due to the interview made by Öğreten with Nokta magazine writer, Perihan Mağden with the headline, “Nokta writer Perihan Mağden: Erdoğan is like a cornered wild tiger.” Nokta magazine had been pulled off shelves due to its cover, depicting President Erdoğan while taking a ‘selfie’ in front of a soldier funeral. The interview was published on the website of Yurt Daily as well. Former executives of Yurt Daily, Orhan Şahin and Mehmet Çağlar Tekin were also on trial within the lawsuit and were acquitted.
